More than 165 miles of trails and roads beckon all levels of hikers. An assortment of loop trails give day hikers a great glimpse at a variety of Island locales, returning them to where they started. Of course, the grand-daddy of them all is the Trans-Catalina Trail, a 38.5 miles trail that traverses the entire Island, beginning at Avalon, stretching out to Parson’s Landing on the West End, looping back to Two Harbors for the finish.

Avalon has three public beaches and one private beach.

South Beach, Middle Beach and Step Beach are public beaches that lie along Crescent Avenue, steps away from hotels, shops, restaurants, restrooms and recreation. During the summer months, each public beach has a lifeguard on duty, as well as a swim line.

Once you arrive in Avalon, you’ll quickly discover that it has a very pedestrian-friendly downtown. Visitors enjoy exploring the hills surrounding Avalon, and renting a golf cart, pedal bike, or electric bike is the best way to do just that. Golf carts are available for hourly rental, while bikes can be rented for an hour, half a day, or a full day.

In the 1920's 14 bison came to Catalina Island for the filming of a feature film. They were allowed to stay and have become an integral part of Catalina Island. Cared for by the Catalina Island Conservancy, the herd, now around 100 bison, roam wild within Catalina Island's vast wild lands. Several of the island tour companies offer tours of the interior where you can view bison, Catalina Island fox, and American Bald Eagles. 

Catalina Island attracts divers from far and wide with it's clear water and variety of Marine Protected Areas. Many consider Catalina Island to be the best spot in Southern California for diving, with dives varying from easy to advanced. There are many locations around Catalina Island for diving. Divers can expect to see abundant marine life in all forms including kelp forests, giant black sea bass, yellowtail, lobsters, abalone, horn shark, nudibranch, large pelagic species, eels, sheep crab, garibaldi, halibut, leopard sharks, and sea lions.

Catalina Island's public golf course is the oldest course west of the Mississippi. It also holds a special place in cinematic history, particularly due to its connection with Hollywood legend John Wayne. Wayne, a frequent visitor to the island, was known to play golf at this picturesque course during his stays. His love for Catalina Island and its golf course contributed to its reputation as a premier destination for both relaxation and recreation, attracting other Hollywood stars and golf enthusiasts over the years.

The Catalina Island Casino is without a doubt Catalina Island’s most recognizable landmark.  The round, Art Deco structure rises the equivalent of 12 stories, and is surrounded by the sea on three sides.  During the day its white facade gleams in the sunshine, and at night it lights the harbor with a romantic glow. Commissioned and built by William Wrigley, Jr, the Catalina Casino opened on May 29, 1929, just in time for the summer season. The Catalina Casino – which is actually not a gambling facility but “place of entertainment” – played host to dozens of Big Bands through the 1930s and 1940s.  Guests came by ship to dance the Charleston and later Jitterbug on the huge parquet floor.  They danced the night away to the music of Glenn Miller, Harry James, Kay Kyser, and many others over the years.

Catalina Island’s Golf Gardens has been a much-loved island fixture for more than 40 years, and is an ideal spot for an afternoon of family fun. Nestled among shade trees less than one block from the beach, its award-winning par-51 layout is known in mini-golf circles as one of the most beautiful and challenging in the world. It’s open every day, year-round. Tickets may be purchased at any Catalina Island Company ticket booth or at the main entrance.
